History of the Department


       The Department of Commerce has emerged to function with B.Com. degree Programme from the year 1982. The first batch of B.Com., Graduates came out in May, 1985 with the merit of being University First Place in overall results.
       M.Com., degree Programme was Commenced in 1985  in continuance of the first batch of B.Com.  In 1993, an additional section for B.Com. was started on self- financing basis to meet the increasing demand for B.Com. degree Course. The department has attained the status of Post- Graduate Research Department of Commerce with the introduction of M.Phil., degree Programme in 2002 (Full Time) and Ph.D (Full time) in the year 2008.  Seven of the faculty members of Commerce are the Recognized Research Advisors of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli for guiding Ph.D. Scholars. Seven of the faculty members have successfully guided 37 Ph.D. candidates.


Unique Features


  • Department of Commerce has completed five Minor Research Projects.
  • Organised two National Level Seminars and one State Level seminar sponsored by UGC .
  • Faculty members have occupied key positions in the college
  • Principal, Principal in charge, Vice Principal, Bursar, Controller of Examinations, NAAC Coordinator, IQAC Coordinator, Mid-Term Autonomous Review Coordinator, Coordinator – Triennial Inspection Commission, Autonomous Coordinator and Coordinator for Best College Award
  • Got the 1st place in the University Exam in the Bharathidasan University in the year of inception.

Mission


  • To provide quality commerce education in B.Com., M.Com., M.Phil., and    
  • Ph.D.  Programmes and Certificate courses by framing need based course structure;
  • To impart practical knowledge and skill by arranging Industrial Visits and through internship training on e-filing of tax returns and e-banking operations.
  • To inculcate discipline, morals and values of life among the students by offering the subjects like Value Education,  Environmental Studies  and through constant preaching of moral values and ethics to students.

Objectives


  • To build a strong foundation in accounting,  income-tax law and practice, cost and management accounting and business environment.
  • To prepare students for career options in banking, marketing, company law and related fields.
  • To equip students with skills to excel in their future careers.
  • To prepare students to enter Masters Programme like M.Com., M.B.A., and pursue professional programmes like C.A., A.C.S., ICWA, CMA, etc.
  • To develop entrepreneurial skills in students.
  • To impart knowledge in advanced concepts and applications in different fields of commerce.
  • To prepare students to enter into professional courses.
  • To educate students to occupy important positions in business houses, industries and organisations.
